Old Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, 1894. Creator: Unknown
Old Sarum, Salisbury, Wiltshire, 1894. Old Sarum, the site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury in England. An Iron Age hillfort was erected around 400 BC, controlling the intersection of two native trade paths and the Hampshire Avon. The site continued to be occupied during the Roman period, when the paths became roads. The huge earthwork was chosen by the Normans as the site for a castle, palace and cathedral. In 1226 the cathedral was transferred to a new site in the valley, now known as Salisbury, and the castle gradually fell out of use. From Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1894, showcasing the ancient site of Old Sarum in Salisbury, Wiltshire. The creator of this remarkable image remains unknown, but their work beautifully captures the essence of this historic location. Old Sarum holds great significance as it was once home to the earliest settlement of Salisbury in England. Dating back to around 400 BC, an Iron Age hillfort was constructed at this strategic spot where two native trade paths intersected with the Hampshire Avon River. Over time, these paths evolved into roads during the Roman period. The Normans recognized the importance of Old Sarum's vast earthwork and chose it as a site for a castle, palace, and cathedral. However, by 1226, the cathedral had been relocated to a new valley site known today as Salisbury. As a result, Old Sarum gradually lost its purpose and fell into disuse. In this image from "Beautiful Britain; views of our stately homes" we are transported to an era when agriculture thrived amidst picturesque countryside landscapes. The fields surrounding Old Sarum are dotted with haystacks while farmland stretches out beyond sight. This print serves as both a historical artifact and a testament to British heritage. It invites us to explore not only the physical remnants left behind by our ancestors but also sparks our imagination about life in rural England during that time period.
