Napoleon Bonaparte, 1845. Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) who enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to St Helena

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic figure of Napoleon Bonaparte, painted by Freeman in 1845. The portrait captures the essence of a man who rose from humble beginnings to become one of history's most influential leaders. Napoleon Bonaparte's meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army is well-documented, but it was his coup in 1799 that truly marked a turning point in his career. As he overthrew the government and became first consul, Napoleon solidified his power and effectively became dictator of France. In 1804, he took an audacious step by declaring himself Emperor, setting off a series of military campaigns across Europe known as the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena established France as a dominant force on the continent. However, Napoleon's ambition eventually led to his downfall. His ill-fated invasion of Russia in 1812 proved disastrous, followed by defeat at Leipzig in 1813. Forced to abdicate and exiled to Elba, he managed to escape briefly before being defeated once again at Waterloo by Wellington. This remarkable engraving portrays both the strength and vulnerability of this complex historical figure. It serves as a reminder not only of Napoleon's military prowess but also his ultimate defeat and exile on St Helena. The print collector has preserved this significant piece for us today, allowing us to reflect upon one man's extraordinary journey through war, leadership, triumphs, failures, and ultimately exile - forever etching him into our collective memory.
