Monument at Croce di Petra, at Kalougaren, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Monument at Croce di Petra, at Kalougaren, 1854. Memorial at Calugareni in modern Romania, ...which commemorates the victory of Prince Michael of Wallachia over Sultan Mahmoud in 1585. The Sultan sent an army of 180, 000 men under the Grand Vizier Sinan Pacha, to reduce the Principality to its old obedience...Prince Michael attacked the Turks, who fled across the bridge, carrying with them...Sinan Pacha, who fell into the water, and was saved only by the courage of one of his followers... Several other Pachas, less fortunate than their chief, were captured by the Wallachs; and Prince Michael, surrounded by his Boyards, cut off, with his own hand, the head of the chief of them, Karaman Pacha...The monument [erected by Prince Michael] is now falling to ruin, typifying...the state to which the country has been reduced since the Wallachs lost the spirit of their ancestors'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the Monument at Croce di Petra, located at Kalougaren in modern-day Romania. The monument commemorates the historic victory of Prince Michael the Brave of Wallachia over Sultan Mahmoud and the Ottoman army in 1585. The Sultan had dispatched an enormous force of approximately 180,000 men, led by the Grand Vizier Sinan Pasha, with the intention of reasserting Ottoman control over the Principality. Prince Michael, determined to defend his lands, launched a surprise attack on the Turks as they crossed the bridge. In the ensuing chaos, Sinan Pasha fell into the water and was saved by one of his followers. Tragically, several other Pachas were not so fortunate and were captured by the Wallachians. Amidst the triumphant scene, Prince Michael is depicted standing victoriously, surrounded by his Boyards, as he beheads the chief of the Ottoman forces, Karaman Pasha, with his own hand. The monument, a testament to this momentous victory, now stands in a state of decay, a poignant reminder of the country's rich history and the challenges it has faced throughout the centuries. This photograph was published in the "Illustrated London News" in 1854, providing a glimpse into the past and the historical significance of this monument. The image offers a powerful visual representation of the courage and determination of Prince Michael and the Wallachian people in the face of overwhelming odds.
