EDITORS COMMENTS
The Middle Watch, illustration from Drakes Drum and Other Songs of the Sea, 1905 captures a hauntingly beautiful scene at dusk. In this mesmerizing artwork by Arthur David McCormick (1860-1943), we witness the ethereal presence of an angelic figure standing guard over a fleet of battleships. The colour lithograph brings to life Henry Newbolt's (1862-1938) evocative poem about the Middle Watch - that crucial period in the middle of the night when sailors keep watch for any signs of danger. The image is steeped in maritime history and legend, as it depicts Sir Francis Drake's famous snare drum known as 'Drake's Drum'. This legendary instrument accompanied Drake during his circumnavigation of the world in the 16th century. Just before his death off Panama, he ordered that if England ever faced peril, someone should beat the drum to summon him back to defend his country. The composition exudes a sense of mystery and anticipation with its nocturnal setting and ghostly ships on calm waters. The guardian angel symbolizes protection and vigilance over these naval vessels while they rest during their watchful hours. It is said that this powerful spirit can be heard through Drake's Drum during times of national crisis. McCormick's skillful use of color adds depth and drama to this historical moment captured on paper. This print serves as a reminder not only of our rich maritime heritage but also our collective resilience in times when our nation
