Kick d Out!!, 1870. Artist: Joseph Swain

Kick d Out!!, 1870. A burly Canadian kicks a representative of the Irish Fenian movement out of Canada and back to America where President Grant is waiting. This relates to a long-running problem. In 1866, the American branch of the Irish Fenian movement had hatched plans, unsuccessful at the time, to invade Canada. Now, a further attempt had been made but, again, they were unsuccessful. Regular troops and Canadian volunteers had resisted their attack, and within only a few days, the United States had the Fenian leader, O Neill, in custody. As is usual, the Fenian representative is depicted almost as an ape by Tenniel. He is also wearing trousers similar to those being worn by President Grant, and this refers to the fact that much of the funding of the Fenian movement, both in Ireland and in America, was funded by American sympathisers. From Punch, or the London Charivari, June 11, 1870

Kick d Out!!, 1870 - A Political Cartoon Depicting the Defeat of the Irish Fenian Movement

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This powerful political cartoon, created by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel in 1870, captures a significant moment in history. The image portrays a burly Canadian forcefully kicking out a representative of the Irish Fenian movement from Canada, symbolizing their failed attempt to invade the country. In America, President Ulysses Simpson Grant awaits their arrival. The Fenian movement had long been a thorn in the side of both Britain and Canada. In 1866, they had planned an unsuccessful invasion of Canada from their American base. Now, despite another attempt at aggression, Canadian troops and volunteers successfully repelled them within days. This defeat led to the capture of Fenian leader O'Neill by United States authorities. Tenniel's caricature-like depiction presents the Fenian representative as almost ape-like while wearing trousers similar to those worn by President Grant himself. This clever detail highlights how much of the funding for this movement came from sympathetic Americans. Through this satirical engraving published in Punch magazine on June 11th, 1870, Swain and Tenniel shed light on an ongoing problem that plagued relations between Ireland, America, Britain, and Canada during that time period. It serves as a reminder not only of historical events but also showcases how art can be used as a tool for political commentary.
