Charles Alexandre de Calonne and Lomenie de Brienne, French statemen, 18th century (1882-1884). Artist: Pannemaker

Charles Alexandre de Calonne and Lomenie de Brienne, French statemen, 18th century (1882-1884). Calonne (1734-1802) was Controller-General of Finances under Louis XVI from 1783-1787. Frances finances were in a disastrous state and Calonne attempted to bring in a series of taxes and other measures intended to replenish the royal treasury. He failed to have his proposals implemented due to opposition from the assembly of notables and was dismissed, reluctantly, by the king, who supported his proposals. The failure to implement Calonnes financial reforms is seen by some historians as having been an important catalyst in the downfall of the monarchy in the French Revolution. Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne (1727-1794) succeeded Calonne as finance minister in 1787, but was no more able to get reforms accepted than his predecessor and was compelled to resign the following year. Although he swore the civic oath required by the revolutionary constitution after the French Revolution, his status under the Ancien Regime made him the subject of suspicion and he was arrested in 1793 and died in prison the following year. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Charles Alexandre de Calonne and Lomenie de Brienne, two influential French statesmen of the 18th century. Created by artist Pannemaker in the late 19th century, this artwork offers a glimpse into the lives and legacies of these historical figures. Charles Alexandre de Calonne served as Controller-General of Finances under Louis XVI from 1783 to 1787. During his tenure, France faced dire financial circumstances, prompting Calonne to propose various taxes and measures aimed at replenishing the royal treasury. Unfortunately, his proposals were met with opposition from the assembly of notables and ultimately failed to be implemented. Despite King Louis XVI's support for these reforms, their failure is believed by some historians to have played a significant role in triggering the downfall of the monarchy during the French Revolution. Following Calonne's departure, Etienne Charles de Lomenie de Brienne assumed the position of finance minister in 1787 but encountered similar challenges in getting his reforms accepted. Forced to resign just one year later, he too was unable to navigate through France's turbulent political landscape. Although both men found themselves entangled in revolutionary turmoil after swearing allegiance to the new constitution post-French Revolution, Lomenie de Brienne's aristocratic background led him down a tragic path. Arrested in 1793 due to suspicions surrounding his status under Ancien Regime rule, he tragically died while imprisoned a year later. This remarkable print serves as a testament to these two statesmen who grappled with immense financial crises during an era that would forever shape French history.
