Bertrand - 'Dis donc, s'ils allaient nous faire' (So, what if they give us a hard time, all these starving people?),

EDITORS COMMENTS
a thoughtful and somewhat callous question posed by the well-dressed gentleman in this 1838 print by Honore Daumier. His companion, Robert Macaire, responds with a dismissive and derisive attitude towards the "mob" (the people), comparing their shouts and yells to those of dogs after beggars. Macaire assures Bertrand that the people are not dangerous, just stupid. In the scene, Bertrand and Macaire are in a carriage, surrounded by a crowd of people. Macaire, with a smirk on his face, shouts out to the crowd, urging them to move out of the way. The people, initially alarmed, notice that no one has been harmed and react with tenderness towards the seemingly good-natured Bertrand. This print was created by Honore Daumier and published in the French satirical weekly newspaper, Le Charivari, on September 23, 1838. The print is part of the Robert Macaire series, which depicted the character Robert Macaire, a wealthy and arrogant man who often found himself in humorous and absurd situations. The print offers a commentary on the class divide and the attitudes of the wealthy towards the working class during this period in French history. Despite the lighthearted tone of the print, it also highlights the tensions and divisions between the rich and the poor, and the potential for conflict between the two groups. The print is a fascinating glimpse into the social and political climate of 19th century France, and a testament to Daumier's skill as a satirical artist.
