Arion on a Sea Horse and Bacchante on a Panther (pair), 1855. Creator: William Adolphe Bouguereau
Arion on a Sea Horse and Bacchante on a Panther (pair), 1855. These paintings are from a series of eight works that Bouguereau painted for a Parisian home decorated in the style inspired by ancient Roman wall paintings found at Pompeii. The ancient Greek poet Arion escaped pirates by fleeing on the back of a sea creature attracted by the poets singing. In the companion picture, a bacchante, a female follower of the Roman god Bacchus, rides a panther and carries a pinecone-tipped spear called a thyrsus. The figures are silhouetted against a gold honeycomb-patterned background evoking ancient Roman mosaics Bouguereau had studied in Italy. The soft, waxy flesh tones and glimmering gold leaf were calculated to come to life when viewed under the mansions gas lighting

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of exquisite paintings by the renowned French artist William Adolphe Bouguereau. Created in 1855, these artworks were part of a series commissioned for a Parisian home that embraced the style inspired by ancient Roman wall paintings discovered at Pompeii. In one painting, we witness Arion, an ancient Greek poet, escaping from pirates as he rides on the back of a majestic sea horse enchanted by his melodious singing. The companion picture features a bacchante, a female follower of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and revelry. She fearlessly rides atop a panther while wielding a thyrsus -a spear adorned with pinecone tips. The figures are beautifully silhouetted against an opulent gold honeycomb-patterned background reminiscent of ancient Roman mosaics that Bouguereau had studied during his time in Italy. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the soft and waxy flesh tones that seem to come alive when illuminated under gas lighting -the preferred method used within grand mansions during this era. This remarkable artwork captures both mythological narratives and historical influences with its masterful technique and rich symbolism. As we gaze upon these stunning pieces, we are transported back in time to an era where artistry flourished and tales from antiquity came alive through paintbrush strokes.
