Aldersgate, 1670

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that takes us back in time to the Roman walled town of Londinium, now known as the City of London. This intriguing image showcases one of the gates surrounding the ancient city, which was rebuilt in 1617 with a majestic equestrian statue of King Charles I. However, its resilience was tested when it suffered damage during the catastrophic Great Fire of London in 1666. Despite being repaired after the fire's devastation, Aldersgate gate eventually succumbed to progress and increasing traffic flow. By 1761, it became evident that this once grand entrance began to hinder movement in and out of the bustling city. The photograph captures both its architectural beauty and historical significance as an essential gateway into London. The print originates from "Old and New London" a remarkable publication by Walter Thornbury that delves into the rich history, people, and places within England's capital city. Its monochrome composition adds depth and character to this seventeenth-century landmark frozen in time. As we gaze upon this evocative image captured by an unknown creator around 1872, we are transported back centuries ago when Aldersgate stood proudly at one of London's entrances. It serves as a poignant reminder not only of our connection to history but also how urban landscapes evolve over time due to changing needs and demands.
