Wild horses Equus caballus roaming on sagebrush Artemisia tridentata priaire of Cody, Wyoming, USA

The horse Equus ferus caballus is one of two extant subspecies of equus ferus, or the wild horse. Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC. Horses in the subspecies caballus are domesticated, although some domesticated populations live in the wild as feral horses. These feral populations are not true wild horses, as this term is used to describe horses that have never been domesticated

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by Danita Delimont, we are transported to the vast and untamed prairies of Cody, Wyoming. The image showcases a breathtaking scene of wild horses, Equus caballus, gracefully galloping across the sagebrush-covered landscape. These magnificent creatures, belonging to the subspecies Equus ferus caballus, hold a deep historical significance as one of humanity's earliest domesticated animals. Dating back thousands of years, humans began their journey in taming these majestic beings around 4000 BC. By 3000 BC, horse domestication had become widespread. While most horses in this subspecies now live under human care as domesticated companions or working partners, there are still feral populations that roam freely in the wild. These feral horses add an element of mystique and raw beauty to our natural landscapes. The photograph beautifully captures the essence of freedom and strength embodied by these wild equines. Against a backdrop adorned with fluffy clouds and vibrant colors that paint the sky above them, they symbolize resilience and harmony within nature.
