Coat of arms 17th century Robinson and Player

This image is from a copperplate engraving, and shows part of a roll of arms from Richard Blomes Britannia, an atlas published in 1673. It features the coats of arms of people who contributed towards the completion of the work a starting with King Charles II. Each page includes 35 coats of arms, presented here in pairs. These two coats of arms are from folio (page) 9 of the work. In old English, ans appeared as a longs (which looks like an f ), while ss appeared as fs. Com was an abbreviation for County. A number is assigned to each benefactor. Here are the accompanying texts (followed by modernised English where appropriate): 265. Sr. Io: ROBINSON of Newenham Courtacy in Com Oxford of Farminwood and Grafton Underwood in Com Northampton & of London Kt. & Bart. & Lieutenant of ye Tower (Sir Joseph Robinson courtesy of Newnham College, Oxford). 266. Sr. Tho: PLAYER of Hackney in Com Middlefex Kt. & Chamberlaine of ye Citty of London (Sir Thomas Player)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a glimpse into the rich history of 17th-century England through its intricate coat of arms. Taken from a copperplate engraving found in Richard Blomes Britannia, an esteemed atlas published in 1673, this image features a section of a roll of arms that pays homage to those who contributed to the completion of this remarkable work. Displayed on page nine, these two coats of arms are presented side by side, each telling their own unique story. The first belongs to Sir Joseph Robinson, hailing from Newenham Courtacy in Oxfordshire and also associated with Farminwood and Grafton Underwood in Northamptonshire as well as London. Knighted and bestowed with the title Bart. , he held the prestigious position of Lieutenant at the Tower. The second coat of arms represents Sir Thomas Player, residing in Hackney within Middlesex County. As Chamberlain for the City of London, his influence extended far beyond his local community. It is worth noting that during this era, certain letters were represented differently than they are today; "ans" appeared as longs (resembling an "f"), while "ss" was depicted as "fs". Additionally, abbreviations such as "Com" stood for County. Preserved meticulously over centuries and now available as a stunning print courtesy of Fine Art Storehouse's Whiteway collection, this piece offers viewers an opportunity to delve into England's past and appreciate the contributions made by these distinguished individuals.
