Yellow wildflower common avens Victorian botanical illustration by Anne Pratt
Yellow wildflower common avens, Geum urbanum. The botanical name, Geum, originated from the Greek geno, to yield an agreeable fragrance, because, when freshly dug up, the root has a clove-like aroma. Avens had many names in the fourteenth century, and was called the Blessed Herb (Herba benedicta), from which a common name became Herb Bennet. Anne Pratt (1806 - 1893) was a self-taught botanical and ornithological illustrator and author from Strood, Kent. This print is from the book " Wild Flowers", printed in 1893 by SPCK (the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Victorian botanical illustration by Anne Pratt captures the delicate beauty of the Yellow wildflower common avens, also known as Geum urbanum. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring this wildflower to life, showcasing its unique characteristics. The name "Geum" originates from the Greek word geno, meaning to yield an agreeable fragrance. This is because when the root of this flower is freshly dug up, it emits a delightful clove-like aroma. In medieval times, avens had various names, but one that stood out was Herb Bennet or Blessed Herb (Herba benedicta). These names reflect the reverence people held for this plant due to its medicinal properties. Anne Pratt, a self-taught illustrator and author from Strood, Kent in England, created this print as part of her book "Wild Flowers" published in 1893 by SPCK (the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge). Her passion for botany and ornithology shines through in her meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. This print serves as a testament to both nature's wonders and Pratt's artistic talent. It transports us back to a time when scientific knowledge was intertwined with religious beliefs. Displaying this print would not only add elegance and charm to any space but also serve as a reminder of our connection with nature throughout history.
