3121790 zoopraxiscope disc showing an acrobat performing a horse back somersault, 1893 (litho) by Muybridge, Eadweard (1830-1904); Private Collection; (add.info.: The zoopraxiscope is an early device for displaying motion pictures. Created by photographic pioneer Eadweard Muybridge in 1879, it may be considered the first movie projector. The zoopraxiscope projected images from rotating glass disks in rapid succession to give the impression of motion. The stop-motion images were initially painted onto the glass, as silhouettes. A second series of discs, made in 1892-1894, used outline drawings printed onto the discs photographically, then colored by hand. Some of the animated images are highly complex, featuring multiple combinations of sequences of animal and human movement;
The device appears to have been one of the primary inspirations for Thomas Edison and William Kennedy Dicksons Kinetoscope, the first commercial film exhibition system; ); Prismatic Pictures; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a zoopraxiscope disc from 1893, featuring an acrobat performing a remarkable horseback somersault. Created by the visionary photographer Eadweard Muybridge, the zoopraxiscope was an early invention that revolutionized motion pictures and can be considered the precursor to modern-day movie projectors. The device projected images onto rotating glass disks in rapid succession, creating the illusion of movement. In this particular image, Muybridge's stop-motion technique captures the acrobat mid-air as he gracefully flips through space atop his trusty steed. The lithographic process used for this series involved printing outline drawings onto the discs photographically before being meticulously hand-colored. Muybridge's zoopraxiscope not only captivated audiences with its mesmerizing animations but also served as a significant source of inspiration for other pioneers in film technology. Thomas Edison and William Kennedy Dickson drew upon Muybridge's invention when developing their own groundbreaking creation: the Kinetoscope, which became one of the first commercially successful film exhibition systems. This extraordinary piece from Fine Art Finder allows us to appreciate both Muybridge's artistic genius and his profound impact on cinematic history. It is a testament to his innovative spirit and relentless pursuit of capturing movement through photography – forever immortalizing moments like this breathtaking horseback somersault for generations to come.
