Bust of a Lady (possibly Fanny Coleman), 1872 (marble)
499877 Bust of a Lady (possibly Fanny Coleman), 1872 (marble)
by Carpeaux, Jean-Baptiste (1827-75); 83.2x58.5x39.4 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Abandoning the strict frontality and symmetry of the neoclassical style, Carpeaux was instead inspired by French portrait busts of the 1600s and 1700s. This bust probably depicts Fanny Coleman (1840-1919), an English actress with whom Carpeaux may have had a romantic relationship. The turn of the head and the undulating drapery infuse the figure with a sense of drama. Patronized by Napoleon III, Carpeaux created the celebrated figural group La Danse for the facade of the Opera Garnier in Paris, a work renowned for its sensual nudes, but denounced by contemporaries as an affront to public decency.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite marble sculpture titled "Bust of a Lady (possibly Fanny Coleman)" created by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux in 1872. Breaking away from the rigid neoclassical style, Carpeaux drew inspiration from French portrait busts of the 17th and 18th centuries to create this masterpiece. The subject of this bust is believed to be Fanny Coleman, an English actress who may have shared a romantic relationship with Carpeaux. The artist skillfully captures her beauty and charm through the gentle smile on her lips and the elegant floral crown adorning her head. Carpeaux's departure from traditional frontality and symmetry can be seen in the slight turn of the lady's head, adding a touch of drama to the composition. The flowing drapery further enhances this sense of movement and grace. Renowned for his sensual nudes, Carpeaux faced criticism during his time for pushing boundaries with works like "La Danse". However, his talent was recognized by Napoleon III himself, who became one of his patrons. Displayed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this remarkable sculpture stands as a testament to Carpeaux's artistic prowess. With its intricate details and lifelike portrayal, it continues to captivate viewers even after more than a century since its creation.
