Dutch Fleet in the Medway: Burning of Sheerness (engraving)

665300 Dutch Fleet in the Medway: Burning of Sheerness (engraving) by English School, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Illustration for Old Englands Worthies (Sangster, c 1860). The Raid on the Medway; Battle of the Medway; Raid on Chatham; Battle of Chatham, was a successful Dutch attack on the largest English naval ships, laid up in the dockyards of their main naval base Chatham, that took place in June 1667 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch, under Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, bombarded and captured the town of Sheerness, sailed up the River Thames to Gravesend, then up the River Medway to Chatham, where they burned three capital ships and ten lesser naval vessels and towed away the Unity and the Royal Charles, flagship of the English fleet. The raid led to a quick end to the war and a favourable peace for the Dutch. It was the worst defeat in the Royal Navys history, and one of the worst suffered by the British military; reign of Charles II); © Look and Learn

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic scene of the "Dutch Fleet in the Medway: Burning of Sheerness". Created by an English School artist in the 19th century, this engraving is a powerful depiction of a significant event during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The image showcases Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter leading his Dutch fleet as they launch a successful attack on Chatham, England's main naval base. The raid began with the bombardment and capture of Sheerness before sailing up the River Thames to Gravesend and finally reaching Chatham. Here, three capital ships and ten lesser naval vessels were set ablaze while two prized English ships, Unity and Royal Charles, were towed away as spoils of war. This audacious assault marked one of the most devastating defeats in British military history and ultimately led to a swift end to the war with favorable terms for the Dutch. The burning wreckage depicted in this engraving symbolizes not only destruction but also serves as a reminder of how even seemingly invincible forces can be humbled by determined adversaries. Preserved within a private collection, this historic artwork offers us an opportunity to reflect on past conflicts and their profound impact on nations' destinies. Through its intricate details and masterful composition, it transports viewers back to that fateful moment when flames engulfed Chatham's dockyards—a pivotal chapter etched forever into history's annals.
