EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Street Boy (colour litho)" takes us back to the late nineteenth century in Victorian London. The image, created by H. W. Petherick and part of a private collection, showcases a young street boy immersed in his daily life. The barefooted boy stands on the bustling streets, representing one of many trades and characters that filled the city during this era. His playful demeanor captures the essence of childhood amidst a backdrop of hard work and occupations. The illustration was originally featured in "London Characters". Aunt Louisa's London Toy Books published by Frederick Warne around 1880. It offers us a glimpse into an era when public transport was dominated by horse-drawn buses, as depicted in the background. Although nudity is subtly hinted at with semi-nude figures adorning the bus line, it serves as a reminder of how different societal norms were during that time period. Bridgeman Images has beautifully preserved this historical piece through their fine art finder platform. This print allows viewers to appreciate not only the artistic talent behind its creation but also gain insight into everyday life and transportation modes from over a century ago.
