EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the raw power and determination of Ayegbeni Yakubu, a Nigerian international footballer who graced the pitch for Everton Football Club between 2003 and 2006. Taken by renowned sports photographer Nick Potts, the image showcases Yakubu in his element, as he prepares to lead the charge for his team during a heated Premier League match. Born on March 22, 1976, in Benin City, Nigeria, Yakubu's football journey began at Maccabi Netanya in Israel before he moved to Portsmouth in the English Football League. His exceptional goalscoring ability soon caught the attention of Everton, who signed him for a then-club record fee of £7.5 million in 2003. At Everton, Yakubu became a fan favorite, earning the nickname "The Powerhouse" due to his physical strength and ability to score crucial goals. In his debut season, he netted 14 goals in all competitions, helping the team secure a place in the FA Cup Final. Over the next three seasons, he continued to impress, scoring a total of 41 goals in 112 appearances. This photograph encapsulates Yakubu's unwavering focus and intensity on the field, as he readies himself for the upcoming challenge. The intense expression on his face and the power in his stance convey the immense pressure and anticipation that comes with playing at the highest level of professional football. As a testament to his impact at Everton, Yakubu's number 9 jersey was retired by the club in 2016, making him only the third player in Everton's history to receive this honor. This photograph serves as a lasting reminder of his incredible contributions to the team and the indelible mark he left on the hearts of Everton fans.
