England take on Hungary at Wembley in 1953

Football - 1953 / 1954 season - England 3 Hungary 6
Englands Jackie Sewell (#10, centre) is tackled by Hungarys Jozsef Bozsik (#4), with Gyula Lorant, left, and Jozsef Zakarias, right, at Wembley.
The British press referred to it as the " Match of the Century" - the originators of the game, against the finest team in the world at that time, the Magical Magyars. However Englands were defeated at home for the first time to a side from outside of the British Isles, and were shown to be technically and tactically inferior to the Hungarian side. The result led to a review of the antiquated training and tactics used by the England team, and the subsequent adoption of continental practices at an international and club level in the English game.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this iconic photo print, we witness a pivotal moment in football history as England takes on Hungary at Wembley in 1953. The match, famously known as the "Match of the Century" brought together the originators of the game against the formidable Hungarian team, aptly named the Magical Magyars. Captured within this frame is England's Jackie Sewell (#10) being tackled by Hungary's Jozsef Bozsik (#4), with Gyula Lorant and Jozsef Zakarias flanking them. Little did anyone know that this encounter would forever change English football. Despite their home advantage, England suffered a crushing defeat for the first time to a non-British Isles side. This loss exposed their technical and tactical inferiority compared to their Hungarian counterparts. It served as a wake-up call for English football authorities who realized they needed to modernize their training methods and adopt continental practices both internationally and at club level. This historic result sparked an introspective review of antiquated training techniques and tactics employed by England's national team. Consequently, it paved the way for significant changes that revolutionized English football forever. As we gaze upon this image from November 25th, 1953, we are reminded not only of a remarkable clash between two great teams but also of how one game can shape an entire nation's approach to its beloved sport.
