Manakins Framed Print Collection

Manakins are passerine birds belonging to the family Pipridae, and are found in tropical forests of Central and South America, ranging from Mexico to Argentina. They have short wings and long tails, and they can be identified by their bright colors and unique courtship displays. Males have brightly colored plumage with blue, yellow or red patches on their heads, backs or wings. Females tend to be duller in coloration than males but still show some bright colors on their throats or wings. Manakins feed mainly on small insects such as ants, beetles and caterpillars which they catch while foraging through the undergrowth of the forest floor. During breeding season males perform spectacular courtship displays involving jumps, flips and vocalizations which attract females to them for mating purposes and can an important part of tropical ecosystems as they help control insect populations while also providing a source of food for other animals such as snakes and birds of prey.
