The force feeding of suffragettes on hunger strike was a common tactic used by the government to break their campaign for women's suffrage and the right to vote. This inhumane practice ended in 1913 with the passing of the Cat and Mouse Act, officially known as the Prisoners (Temporary Discharge for Ill Health) Act. This legislation allowed suffragettes to be released from prison when their health deteriorated due to the force feeding, only to be re-arrested once they had recovered.
