EDITORS COMMENTS
This print commemorates the First Battle of Copenhagen, a pivotal moment in European history that took place on April 2, 1801. The battle took place in the waters of the Danish capital city, Copenhagen, and marked the decisive victory of the British Royal Navy under the command of Admirals Hyde Parker, Horatio Nelson, and Sir Hyde Parker. The First Battle of Copenhagen was a significant event during the Anglo-Danish War of 1801, which was itself a part of the larger European conflict known as the French Revolutionary Wars. The battle was fought between the British fleet, which numbered around 100 ships, and the Danish fleet, which had 60 vessels. The Danish fleet was allied with the League of Armed Neutrality, a group of northern European powers that sought to maintain the balance of power in Europe and challenge British naval dominance. The battle began when the British fleet, under the command of Admirals Hyde Parker and Horatio Nelson, attempted to blockade the Danish fleet in Copenhagen harbor. Despite initial successes, the British forces were ordered to withdraw by Hyde Parker, who believed that the Danish fleet was too strong to be defeated in a direct engagement. However, Nelson disobeyed the order and led a daring attack on the Danish line, resulting in a decisive British victory. The First Battle of Copenhagen had far-reaching consequences. The dissolution of the League of Armed Neutrality marked the end of any significant Danish resistance to British naval power, and the victory helped to secure Britain's dominance of the seas during the Napoleonic Wars. This print serves as a testament to the bravery and strategic acumen of the British admirals and their crews, and to the enduring importance of naval power in European history.
