EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the tragic beauty of the "Buddha of Bamiyan" in Afghanistan. Standing tall and majestic, Salsaal was one of two monumental statues carved into the cliffside in the Bamiyan valley during the 6th century. These magnificent Buddhas were a testament to the classic blended style of Gandhara art. Sadly, their existence was abruptly ended in March 2001 when they were dynamited and destroyed by orders from Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar. The Taliban government deemed these ancient treasures as un-Islamic, leading to their devastating demise. In this image, we witness a glimpse of what once stood proudly against clear blue skies at an altitude of 2,500 meters. The absence of people allows us to focus solely on the spirituality and tranquility emanating from this iconic symbol. The photograph showcases not only the historical significance but also highlights its importance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It serves as a reminder that even though physically gone, these remnants continue to hold immense cultural value and tell stories through archaeology and artistry. HADI ZAHER's skillful photography perfectly encapsulates both the grandeur and sorrow surrounding this monument's loss while preserving its memory for generations to come.
