EDITORS COMMENTS
Great print capturing the determination and focus of Derek Dougan during his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1960s. Derek Dougan, a native of Trinidad and Tobago, joined Wolves in 1959 and quickly became a fan favorite with his electrifying performances on the pitch. In this image, taken by renowned sports photographer Peter Robinson, Dougan is seen in mid-action during a league match. The intensity in his eyes and the set of his jaw convey his unwavering commitment to the game. The crowd roars in the background, adding to the electric atmosphere of the stadium. Dougan's time at Wolves was marked by numerous milestones. He was the first black player to represent England at the senior level, making his debut against Scotland in 1962. He also played a crucial role in Wolves' successful run in the European Cup Winners' Cup, scoring the winning goal in the final against NK Dinamo Zagreb in 1960. Despite facing discrimination and racism both on and off the pitch, Dougan remained a formidable force. His resilience and talent inspired generations of footballers and paved the way for greater diversity in the sport. This print is a testament to Dougan's indomitable spirit and his significant contribution to the history of Wolverhampton Wanderers and English football as a whole. The black and white composition adds to the timeless quality of the image, making it a must-have for any football memorabilia collection.
