Princess Pocahontas statue unveiled at Gravesend. Gravesend, Kent: John S. Battle

Princess Pocahontas statue unveiled at Gravesend.
Gravesend, Kent: John S. Battle, a former Governer of Virginia, and Moyor of Gravesend and Mr L.W Kempster, inspect the 13-feet high, bronze statue of Pocahontas, the Red Indian Princessm which Mr Battle unveiled in the grounds of St. Georges Chapel of Unity here today, in pounding rain. The statue is a gift from the people of Virginia, who revere the Princess as a saviour of the early settlers. She died here aboard a ship which was to carry her home to America, and she is buried in the chancel of the chapel. Mr Battle also planted a tree in remembrance, and so did Lord Hailsham, who last year headed a delegation to the 350th anniversary celebrations of the state.

Princess Pocahontas Statue Unveiled at Gravesend - A Symbol of Unity and Remembrance

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In a poignant ceremony amidst pounding rain, John S. Battle, former Governor of Virginia and Mayor of Gravesend, unveiled the magnificent 13-feet high bronze statue of Princess Pocahontas in the grounds of St. George's Chapel of Unity. This remarkable gift from the people of Virginia pays homage to the Red Indian Princess who is revered as a savior by early settlers. The solemn occasion was further marked by Mr. Battle planting a tree in remembrance, joined by Lord Hailsham, who had led a delegation to last year's momentous 350th anniversary celebrations in Virginia. The significance behind this commemorative act lies not only in honoring Princess Pocahontas but also fostering unity between nations. This photograph captures a woman standing proudly beside the imposing monument adorned with feathers—a symbol synonymous with Native American culture—representing strength and resilience. It serves as a visual testament to the enduring legacy left behind by this extraordinary princess. Pocahontas' final resting place within the chapel's chancel adds an air of reverence and poignancy to this historic event. As we gaze upon this image frozen in time on October 5th, 1958, we are reminded that even across vast oceans and centuries later, her story continues to inspire us all towards compassion and understanding among diverse cultures.
