EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a moment of resistance and determination in the face of eviction. In Paragon Mansions, Hayfield Passage, Stepney Green, families who were expecting to be forcibly removed from their tenements have taken matters into their own hands. With boxes and lumber piled high on the staircase, they have created a barricade against the landlord's intrusion. A defiant notice boldly proclaims "The landlord shall not pass" chopped onto the wall as a symbol of their unwavering resolve. In response to this dire situation, a Tenants Association has been formed to fight for their rights. One member of these courageous families expressed their intention to keep bailiffs out until alternative accommodation was arranged for them. The living conditions in this poverty-stricken area are evident as children returning from school are forced to be hauled up by ropes. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by those living in slums during this tumultuous time between wars. It showcases both the resilience and desperation that characterized many impoverished communities across Europe at that time. As police arrive at the scene, tensions rise even higher. This image encapsulates an important historical moment where ordinary people stood together against injustice and fought for better lives amidst challenging circumstances.
