EDITORS COMMENTS
Tetbury Station, Gloucestershire, c. 1940s: A Journey Back in Time This evocative photograph captures the essence of Tetbury Station in the 1940s, as the steam era began to fade away. The image shows the approach to the station from the tracks, with the station building nestled among the trees and the surrounding countryside. Tetbury Station, located in the picturesque town of Tetbury in Gloucestershire, opened in 1889 and was a vital stop on the Tetbury Branch Line. The Tetbury Branch Line, which connected Tetbury to Kemble and then on to Swindon and beyond, played an essential role in the local community. Passengers used the train to travel to work, visit family, or explore new places. The station was also an important hub for goods traffic, with local produce and industrial goods transported to markets and factories across the region. As you gaze at this photograph, you can almost hear the hiss of steam and the clatter of train wheels on the rails. The scene is a snapshot of a bygone era, a time when travel was slower, and the world seemed a little more connected. The station building, with its red brick walls and tall chimney, stands proudly against the backdrop of the rolling hills and trees. The trees themselves, with their autumnal hues, add a sense of seasonality and change. Sadly, Tetbury Station closed its doors in 1964, another casualty of the Beeching Axe, which saw the closure of thousands of railway stations across the country. Today, the station building is home to the Tetbury Railway Museum, a reminder of the important role that the railway played in the lives of people in Tetbury and the surrounding area. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of the railway and the enduring appeal of the steam era.
