EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Norfolk Market Hall in Haymarket, captured around 1900. The image provides a glimpse into the bustling atmosphere of this vibrant marketplace during that era. After undergoing reconstruction work on its west front between 1904 and 1905, the market hall regained its grandeur and became an even more prominent landmark in Sheffield. The premises surrounding the market hall are also highlighted in this photograph. From right to left, we can see various establishments such as J. B. Hindley's Tool Dealer at No. 28, Peoples Boot Market at No. 30, Thomas Parkin Rodgers' music store at No. 34, and Wm Hy Pacey's drapery business at No. 36. Originally erected by Henry Charles, the esteemed 13th Duke of Norfolk, on the site where Tontine Inn once stood, this iconic structure was opened to the public in 1851. For over a century it served as a hub for commerce and social interaction within Sheffield. Sadly, despite its rich history and significance to the local community, Norfolk Market Hall met its demise when it was demolished in 1959. However, thanks to archives like Sheffield Libraries' collection of original prints - including this one marked t03746 - we can still appreciate and remember this architectural gem from days gone by.
