Tevatron particle collider at Fermilab

The circular tunnel containing the Tevatron accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), Illinois, is outlined by the lights of a car driving around the service road above the tunnel. The Tevatron is 2 kilometres in diameter & contains two accelerators one above the other. The top accelerator uses ordinary magnets & accelerates protons to 150 GeV. It then passes them to the lower accelerator, with superconducting magnets, which accelerates them up to 1000 GeV (1 TeV). Beside the service road is a circular " moat" of water to cool the magnets. This 15-minute exposure was taken from the top of Fermilabs 16-floor administration building

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring Tevatron particle collider at Fermilab, located in Illinois. The circular tunnel that houses this groundbreaking accelerator is illuminated by the mesmerizing lights of a car gracefully navigating the service road above. With a diameter spanning an impressive 2 kilometers, the Tevatron consists of two accelerators stacked one atop another. The upper accelerator employs ordinary magnets to propel protons to an astonishing speed of 150 GeV before passing them down to its lower counterpart. Equipped with superconducting magnets, this lower accelerator further propels these particles to an astounding energy level of 1000 GeV or 1 TeV. Adjacent to the service road lies a remarkable circular "moat" filled with water, serving as a cooling mechanism for these powerful magnets. Captured from atop Fermilab's towering 16-floor administration building, this extraordinary image was taken during a lengthy exposure period lasting fifteen minutes. It showcases not only the physical grandeur and complexity of this scientific marvel but also highlights the dedication and ingenuity behind humanity's quest for knowledge in particle physics. This stunning photograph provided by Science Photo Library offers viewers a glimpse into the realm of nuclear research and accelerators while showcasing Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory's pivotal role in advancing our understanding of fundamental particles and their interactions within our universe.
