Quantum resonance

Quantum resonance. Computer model showing quantum resonance. A quantum wavefunction is seen as the parallel waves moving up from bottom. They hit a barrier (black, lower centre). The wavefunction, which describes a particle such as an electron, diffracts through the central hole in the barrier. The waves then reflect from the next, semicircular barrier, and bounce around in the cavity. Usually, only small amounts of waves go through the hole, but if the wavelength matches the size of the cavity, then electrons of that wavelength (energy) accumulate (resonate) in the cavity. Some waves (green) diffract past the barriers. This model was created as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Quantum Resonance" takes us on a mesmerizing journey into the intricate world of quantum mechanics. Created by Professor Eric Heller as an artwork, this computer model beautifully illustrates the concept of quantum resonance. At first glance, we are drawn to the parallel waves gracefully rising from the bottom, representing a quantum wavefunction. As these waves encounter a black barrier in the lower center, something extraordinary happens - they diffract through a central hole within it. This diffraction phenomenon allows the wavefunction, describing particles like electrons, to pass through and enter a cavity. Within this cavity, we witness an enchanting dance of reflection and bouncing as the waves interact with semicircular barriers. Normally only small amounts of waves would penetrate through such holes; however, when their wavelength matches precisely with the size of the cavity, magic unfolds. Electrons carrying that specific wavelength accumulate or resonate within this space. Amidst all this scientific beauty lies an artistic touch - vibrant green waves that elegantly diffract past barriers add depth and intrigue to this simulation turned art piece. Through its abstract patterns and meticulous illustration, "Quantum Resonance" invites us to contemplate profound theories in particle physics while celebrating both scientific research and artistic expression. It is truly a testament to Professor Eric Heller's skillful fusion of science and artistry in creating thought-provoking visual representations of complex concepts like quantum mechanics.
