Jellyfish life cycle, artwork

Jellyfish life cycle, artwork. At bottom right are a sperm (with tail) and egg (round). The sperm fertilises the egg to produce a planula, a small larva covered in cilia. This settles on a surface and develops into a polyp (bottom centre). After a growth phase the polyp begins reproducing asexually and immature jellyfish bud from it. These mature into adult jellyfish, or medusas (top centre). At top right is an enlarged view of a tentacle showing the mechanism by which nematocysts (stinging cells) are deployed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and mesmerizing life cycle of jellyfish, beautifully depicted through artwork. At the bottom right corner, we see a sperm with its distinct tail alongside an egg, representing the beginning of this fascinating journey. As the sperm fertilizes the egg, a planula emerges - a small larva adorned with cilia that aid in its movement. The planula then settles on a surface and transforms into a polyp, as shown at the bottom center of the image. After undergoing a growth phase, this polyp begins reproducing asexually, giving rise to immature jellyfish buds that sprout from it like delicate blossoms. These buds gradually mature into adult jellyfish or medusas, showcased at the top center of this artwork. Intriguingly detailed is an enlarged view of one tentacle found at the top right corner. This close-up reveals how nematocysts or stinging cells are deployed by these gelatinous creatures for defense or capturing prey. This illustration not only highlights various stages in their life cycle but also emphasizes key biological aspects such as sexual reproduction, coelenterate anatomy, and marine biology. It offers us glimpses into both their sessile polyp phase and free-swimming existence as adults. Through this stunning portrayal created by Science Photo Library's talented artists, we gain deeper insights into nature's wonders while appreciating these enigmatic creatures' beauty and complexity within our aquatic world.
