Human hair shaft with split ends SEM

Human hair shaft with split ends, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This can be caused by overheating the hair using curling tongs or hair straigheners, as well as chemical dyes, back combing and over brushing. Hair straighteners can get so hot that the moisture inside the hair shaft can reach boiling temperatures, leaving the hair seriously damaged. The cuticle or scales which cover the outside of each hair shaft can be stripped off. The hair will become brittle, dry and frizzy causing breakages along the shaft. Magnification x111 at 10cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Human hair shaft with split ends SEM" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate world of our hair. Through the lens of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), this colored image reveals the detrimental effects that various styling practices and chemical treatments can have on our precious locks. The visible split ends serve as a stark reminder of how excessive heat from curling tongs or hair straighteners, along with frequent backcombing and over-brushing, can wreak havoc on our hair's health. The intense heat generated by these styling tools can reach such extreme temperatures that it boils the moisture within each strand, resulting in severe damage. As we observe closely, we notice that the outer layer of each hair shaft, known as the cuticle or scales, has been stripped away due to these harmful practices. Consequently, the once lustrous and resilient strands become brittle, dry, and frizzy – prone to breakages along their length. With a magnification level of x111 at 10cm wide, this photograph serves as both an educational tool and a cautionary tale about proper hair care. It reminds us to be mindful when using heated styling tools or applying chemical dyes if we wish to maintain healthy and vibrant tresses. Captured by Power├é┬áand├é┬áSyred for Science Photo Library (not affiliated with any specific company), this image invites us to appreciate both the beauty and fragility of our own unique crowning glory
