Finding a preserved baby mammoth

Paleozoology. Workers retrieving the carcass of a baby mammoth (Mammonteus sp.). The animal was discovered in the Susudan district of northern Russia, and was remarkably well preserved by permafrost in the soil. The preserved cell material may be used for DNA sequencing. Various microorganisms and pollen grains may be preserved on and inside the carcass, giving an indication of the climate and natural environment at the time of the animals death. Photographed in 1989
