Core body temperature maintenance

Body temperature regulation. Artwork based on a thermogram of the human body under different temperature conditions. It is warm at left and cold at right. Temperatures are colour-coded: red (37 degrees Celsius, normal body temperature), peach (37-36 degrees), light pink (36-32 degrees), dark pink (32-28 degrees), light blue (28-25 degrees) and dark blue (below 25 degrees). Even under normal conditions the extremities are cooler. When the body is cold, however, it diverts heat to the core region, incorporating the brain and chest organs, in order to save energy while protecting the vital organs. Death occurs when the core body temperature drops below about 32 degrees

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, based on a thermogram of the human body under varying temperature conditions, delves into the intricate process of core body temperature maintenance. The print showcases a spectrum of colors that represent different temperatures, ranging from warm at the left to cold at the right. At its center lies a vibrant red hue symbolizing normal body temperature (37 degrees Celsius). The image highlights how our bodies instinctively regulate their internal heat levels to ensure optimal functioning. Even in normal conditions, our extremities tend to be cooler than the core region. However, when exposed to colder environments, an extraordinary mechanism kicks in: heat is redirected towards vital organs such as the brain and chest. By conserving energy and safeguarding these essential organs, this ingenious adaptation helps us survive extreme cold temperatures. It's worth noting that once our core body temperature drops below approximately 32 degrees Celsius, it can lead to fatal consequences. This thought-provoking illustration not only offers insights into biology and anatomy but also serves as a reminder of our remarkable ability to maintain homeostasis – striking a delicate balance within ourselves despite external challenges. With elements of artistry intertwined with scientific precision, this print from Science Photo Library captures both beauty and knowledge in one frame.
