Coathanger star cluster

Coathanger star cluster, optical image. This cluster, also known as Brocchis Cluster and Collinder 399, is named for its distinctive shape. The coathanger is formed of the horizontal line of stars across centre and the hook of four stars below it. Once thought to be a true star cluster, in which the stars all formed from the same cloud of gas, modern measurements have shown the stars to be at different distances, implying that it is just a chance alignment of stars rather than a true cluster. Such a grouping of unrelated stars into a pattern is known as an asterism. The cluster is found in the constellation Vulpecula

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Coathanger star cluster, also known as Brocchis Cluster and Collinder 399. Its name derives from its unique shape resembling a coat hanger, with a horizontal line of stars forming the top bar and a hook of four stars below it. Initially believed to be a genuine star cluster where all stars originated from the same gas cloud, modern measurements have revealed that these stars are actually at different distances. This discovery suggests that the Coathanger is merely an accidental alignment of unrelated stars rather than a true cluster. Despite not being an actual star cluster, this asterism remains an awe-inspiring sight in our night sky. Located within the constellation Vulpecula, it adds to the celestial beauty we can observe through telescopes. The intricate arrangement of these stellar bodies against the vastness of space creates a mesmerizing visual spectacle. This remarkable image captures not only the Coathanger's intricate structure but also highlights its place within a larger star field. It serves as a reminder of how nature can create patterns even when there may not be any underlying connection between individual elements. Displayed by Science Photo Library, this photograph invites us to marvel at the wonders of astronomy and appreciate both scientific discoveries and natural phenomena that continue to captivate our imagination.
