Fine Art Prints from Royal Cornwall Museum

A Cornish Cottage, unidentified location, Cornwall. Around 1925

Glass lantern slide from a lecture, entitled Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots, given by Cornishman and amateur photographer, Major Arthur William Gill, in around 1925. He was well known in Cornwall and elsewhere during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations of stills and cine film to many groups including The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society and the London Cornish Society. The quarter plate slides which he took prolifically with his ordinary camera are, in many cases, colour. These were painted by his own hand to great effect

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a charming Cornish Cottage, its exact location still a mystery. Taken around 1925 by Major Arthur William Gill, an esteemed Cornishman and amateur photographer, this image was originally part of his lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots". Major Gill was widely recognized in Cornwall and beyond during the 1920s and 1930s for his remarkable presentations of both still photographs and cine films to various prestigious groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. What sets Major Gill's work apart is not only his prolific use of quarter plate slides but also his exceptional talent for hand-painting them with vibrant colors. This particular slide demonstrates his artistic prowess to great effect. As we delve into this picturesque scene, we are greeted by a tranquil countryside setting featuring a magnificent horse standing beside an old trough. The rustic charm exuded by the cottage evokes nostalgia for simpler times. This photograph print from the Royal Cornwall Museum offers us a glimpse into history while showcasing both the natural splendor of Cornwall and Major Gill's artistic vision that continues to captivate viewers even after all these years.
