Victoria Gardens, Truro, Cornwall. Probably around 1910
The Bandstand in Victoria Gardens with the new Carvedras Viaduct in the background. The all stone structure replaced Isambard Kingdom Brunels original timber fanned viaduct in 1902, the piers of which are still visible. The fountain, which was removed from Boscawen Street after the First World War, is not yet in place. In the background can be seen the Parish church of St George the Martyr, built in 1855. The chimney stacks of Carvedras Smelting Works, with Carvedras House in front, are clearly visible. Truro Railway Station can be seen on the skyline to the left. A boy is standing posed for the photographer, to the right of the bandstand. Victoria Gardens was created to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the serene beauty of Victoria Gardens, Truro, Cornwall. This print captures a moment around 1910, showcasing the picturesque Bandstand against the backdrop of the newly built Carvedras Viaduct. The viaduct's majestic stone structure replaced Isambard Kingdom Brunel's original timber fanned design in 1902, and remnants of its piers can still be seen today. As you immerse yourself in this historic scene, notice how the fountain is yet to find its place after being relocated from Boscawen Street following World War I. In the distance stands St George the Martyr Parish church, an architectural gem erected in 1855. The towering chimney stacks of Carvedras Smelting Works dominate the skyline with Carvedras House standing proudly before them. Notably visible on the horizon is Truro Railway Station, a testament to Cornwall's bustling railway network at that time. To add life and charm to this snapshot from history, a young boy strikes a pose for an unknown photographer beside the bandstand. Victoria Gardens itself was established as a tribute to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 – a tranquil oasis where locals could retreat amidst lush greenery and vibrant flora. This remarkable photograph transports us back over a century ago when wooden structures prevailed and trains chugged along nearby tracks. This image serves as both an enchanting glimpse into our past and a reminder of Truro's rich heritage.
