EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the early 1900s with this print of Market Square, St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. Transporting us to a bygone era, the image captures an almost deserted view of the bustling square. The architectural gems that define this historic town are on full display - J. Matthews shop, the Kings Arms inn, and the Wellington Hotel stand proudly against the backdrop of St Just Church. Intriguingly frozen in time, two young girls steal our attention as they stand curiously outside one of the shops on the left-hand side. Their presence adds a touch of innocence and wonder to this otherwise tranquil scene. Meanwhile, a policeman engages in conversation with another gentleman at the entrance of Wellington Hotel, lending an air of camaraderie amidst these quiet streets. The Kings Arms innkeeper during this period was Alfred Oats according to Kellys Directory records from 1906-1919 – his legacy forever etched into this charming photograph. Preserved as part of A. K Hamilton Jenkin collection at Royal Cornwall Museum, it serves as a testament to both local history and skilled photography. This remarkable snapshot offers us not only a glimpse into daily life over a century ago but also invites us to appreciate how much has changed since then. It is through such evocative images that we can truly grasp and cherish our shared heritage.
