EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 1900s, capturing a picturesque scene of fishing boats and schooners beached in St Ives harbour, Cornwall. The tranquility of the moment is palpable as we witness these majestic vessels resting peacefully on the sandy shore. Amongst them stands one of the three remarkable schooners seen at the water's edge - the St Ives topsail schooner, Susan Elizabeth. However, history tells us that this very vessel met its tragic fate on 17 October 1907 when it was wrecked at Porthminster Beach. A reminder that even amidst such serenity, danger lurks beneath. To the left of our gaze lies another notable ship - SS 602 Majestic. This magnificent vessel was built back in 1861 and now finds itself temporarily grounded on this idyllic coastline. In the foreground, we catch a glimpse of yet another boat named Nelson. It adds an extra touch of charm to this already enchanting composition. The photographer behind this masterpiece remains unknown but their skillful eye has immortalized a moment frozen in time for all to appreciate. The image evokes nostalgia for simpler times when rowing boats and horse-drawn carts were commonplace sights along these shores. This print from Royal Cornwall Museum serves as a window into history, reminding us of both beauty and tragedy that unfolded within St Ives harbour over a century ago.
