EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant spirit of the May Day celebrations in Padstow, Cornwall, around 1920. The focal point of the image is undoubtedly "The Obby Oss" a mythical horse-like creature that plays a central role in this annual tradition. Adorned with swirling skirts and an imposing mask, the fearsome Oss parades through the streets while attempting to catch young maids hidden beneath its fabric. In this particular scene, we see The Obby Oss accompanied by a lively band and a group of sailors on the quay. The atmosphere is electric as accordions play cheerful tunes, drums beat rhythmically, and voices unite in song. The crowd gathered around eagerly watches this enchanting spectacle unfold before their eyes. The photograph also offers glimpses into other elements that contribute to Padstow's maritime charm. Masts and rigging can be seen towering above nearby buildings, reminding us of the town's deep connection to seafaring traditions. Amongst those watching are children who are captivated by both the grandeur of The Obby Oss and the joyous festivities surrounding them. Although taken by an unknown photographer from decades ago, this image continues to evoke a sense of wonderment and excitement associated with Padstow's May Day celebrations. It serves as a timeless reminder of how communities come together to honor age-old customs while creating cherished memories for generations to come.
