EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print transports us back to the 1930s, when rail travel was at its peak and the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice adventurers to explore the enchanting landscapes of Fife and Forfar in Scotland. The poster, skillfully crafted by artist Frieda Lingstrom, showcases a scene that pays homage to Shakespeare's iconic play Macbeth. Intriguingly, three witches are depicted huddled over a bubbling cauldron, evoking the eerie atmosphere of the play. This clever allusion serves as a reminder that many significant events from Macbeth unfolded near Fife and Forfar. Lingstrom's artistic prowess shines through her attention to detail and ability to capture both beauty and intrigue within her work. Frieda Lingstrom was no stranger to creating stunning artwork for travel propaganda, having been commissioned by various governments including Norway and Sweden. Her studies at prestigious institutions such as Central School of Arts and Crafts and Heatherleys undoubtedly contributed to her exceptional talent. Beyond her contributions in poster design, Lingstrom also gained recognition for her breathtaking landscape paintings. This particular print measures an impressive 1010 mm x 640 mm – a testament not only to its historical significance but also its visual impact. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we can't help but be transported into a world where artistry meets adventure; where railway journeys become gateways into realms of magic and mystery.
