EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vintage LNER poster from 1927, highlighting the importance of punctuality in the London and North Eastern Railway. Created by talented artist Austin Cooper, this remarkable artwork features an hourglass as its central motif, symbolizing the passing of time and emphasizing the significance of timely train arrivals. The poster compares the punctuality rates of Liverpool Street Suburban Trains between 1913 and 1927. In elegant typography, it reveals that in 1913, an impressive 86 percent of trains arrived no more than two minutes late. However, despite a staggering increase of 23 percent more trains running in 1927, this figure had risen to an even higher level at 87 percent. Printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd in London, this visually striking piece not only celebrates the railway's commitment to efficiency but also serves as a testament to technological advancements during that era. The meticulous attention to detail evident in Cooper's artwork perfectly captures the essence of reliability and precision associated with rail travel. Preserved within National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print allows us to appreciate both the artistic beauty and historical significance behind early twentieth-century railway posters. It serves as a timeless reminder that even amidst progress and expansion, maintaining punctuality remains paramount for any successful transportation system.
