EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of British Railways' invaluable service to industry during the years 1948-1964. The poster, designed by Terence Cuneo, showcases locomotives bustling in and out of the ICI chemical works at Billingham, Stockton-on-Tees. A true testament to the symbiotic relationship between BR and ICI, this image represents their collaboration in delivering essential resources. ICI heavily relied on British Railways for its transportation needs, with nearly 2 million tons of coal and 150,000 tons of other commodities being delivered annually to their chemical works at Billingham. Moreover, BR efficiently transported three quarters of a million tons of fertilizers, cement, bulk liquids, and various other products dispatched from the works. Terence Cuneo's artistic prowess shines through in this masterpiece as he skillfully captures not only the industrial setting but also portrays his versatility as an artist who excelled in railway posters as well as portraits (including royal ones) and ceremonial or military subjects. The historical significance of this artwork cannot be overstated; it serves as a reminder of how British Railways played an integral role in supporting industries across the nation. This print is a remarkable representation that encapsulates both BR's dedication to service excellence and Cuneo's artistic brilliance.
