EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to the opening ceremony of the Variety Playground at Arnold Estate in Bermondsey, South East London on Wednesday 3rd October 1951. The image captures a heartwarming moment as actress Simone Silva extends her helping hand to assist a child onto a swing. The playground itself is a testament to the power of community and charity. It was constructed using the funds raised from a midnight matinee organized by The Variety Club of Great Britain in September 1949. With their remarkable effort, they managed to collect an impressive £6,000 which was dedicated towards ensuring the safety and well-being of little Londoners who would otherwise be engaged in dangerous street games. Located on what was once a bombed site at Arnold Estate, this playground stands as both a symbol of resilience and hope for the local residents. It serves as an oasis where children can freely enjoy themselves while being shielded from potential harm. This photograph not only captures an iconic moment but also reflects the spirit of giving that prevailed during those times. It reminds us that even amidst adversity, communities can come together to create something truly special for future generations. Freddie Cole's skillful lens has immortalized this beautiful scene forever, allowing us to appreciate and celebrate this significant milestone in South East London's history.
