This print captures the iconic Robin Hood statue in Castle Place, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Standing tall and proud, the legendary folk hero is depicted with his bow and arrow missing. During the 1950s and 1960s, this beloved statue became a prime target for souvenir hunters who would steal the arrow as a memento. The City Council was burdened with constantly replacing it at a cost of £55 each time. Determined to put an end to this vandalism, authorities decided to take drastic measures. In an effort to deter future thieves, a new arrow was crafted from an exceptionally strong material using a specialized welding process. This innovative solution aimed to make it nearly impossible for vandals to remove or damage the arrow again. The date etched on this photograph reveals that it was taken on May 15th, 1966 – capturing not only a moment in history but also showcasing how communities can come together to protect their cherished landmarks. This image serves as both a reminder of Nottingham's rich folklore heritage and as evidence of human ingenuity when faced with challenges.
