Forty French boys and girls aged between 9 - 11 from Boulogne are starting a fortnights schooling at Cannonbury Primary School, Islington, London, N1. They came with forty Islington children who stayed with them in Boulogne, and in whose homes they will stay now.
The exchange was the idea of Mrs Hilda Wurr headmistress of Cannonbury School where all the children are taught French from the age of 8.
In Boulogne the English children had tuition all in French at the Ecole Cary for boys and girls at the Ecole Frederic Sauvage. But now it is the turn of the French children to have their lessons in English in a double mixed class with English boys and girls.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment in the summer of 1967, as forty French boys and girls aged between 9-11 embark on an educational exchange at Cannonbury Primary School in Islington, London. The brainchild of Mrs. Hilda Wurr, the visionary headmistress of Cannonbury School, this unique program aims to foster cultural understanding and language skills among young learners. The photograph showcases the French school children relishing their daily bottle of milk during break time. With beaming smiles on their faces, they eagerly grasp their straws and enjoy this nutritious treat together. This simple act symbolizes unity and camaraderie between two nations. These bright-eyed students from Boulogne had previously hosted forty Islington children in their homes during the initial leg of the exchange. Now it is their turn to experience life in England firsthand by staying with English families while attending classes alongside local pupils. At Cannonbury School, where all students start learning French from age eight onwards, these enthusiastic youngsters will immerse themselves in an English-speaking environment for a fortnight. They will join double mixed classes with English boys and girls to further enhance their language proficiency. This nostalgic image not only evokes memories of a bygone era but also reminds us of the power education has in bridging cultural gaps and fostering lifelong friendships across borders.
