EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in aviation history. The image showcases a Hawker Siddleley Harrier GR 1, the world's first fixed-wing vertical/short takeoff and landing close support aircraft, as it gracefully lands at St Pancras, London. This event marked the preparation for the Transatlantic Air Race, where another Harrier would take off from New York City. What makes this occasion truly remarkable is that it was the first time ever that fixed-wing jet aircraft had operated from the heart of any city center. The significance of this achievement cannot be overstated, as it showcased groundbreaking technological advancements in aerospace engineering. Squadron Leader Tom Lecky-Thompson, aged 34 at the time, piloted this daring flight across over 3000 miles from London to New York. Organized by the esteemed London Daily Mail newspaper on March 5th, 1969, this race pushed boundaries and captured global attention. The photograph itself portrays an air of excitement and innovation. It beautifully captures both the power and elegance of this cutting-edge military jet against a backdrop of urban architecture. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of how far aviation has come since those pioneering days in the late 1960s when dreams took flight and new possibilities were realized in our skies.
