The King of the Ring, Muhammad Ali became World Heavyweight champion for the third time
The King of the Ring, Muhammad Ali became World Heavyweight champion for the third time on Friday (15.9.78) when he outpointed and outclassed Leon Spinks. And the question of whether or not he will retire was still left unanswered. The fight itself, was exactly what Ali said it would be, a professional against a novice. The referee and judges were king in giving Spinks four rounds each. Although it was never a great flight. Alis superiority was clear from the start. The only logical opponent left for Ali is the holder of the World Boxing Council championship, Larry Holmes. And Ali might be tempted to make the effort just one more time. But theres one thing that stands in his way. He wants 10 million dollars -- after tax! The Ali Clan are united in victory. Next to Ali is his wife Veronica, then Dick Gregory a comedian. Behind the champ is his brother Rachman, with manager Herbert Muhammad on the right. 18th September 1978 P016480

The King of the Ring, Muhammad Ali - A Legend's Triumph and Uncertain Future
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we witness the iconic moment when Muhammad Ali reclaimed his World Heavyweight championship for an unprecedented third time on September 15th, 1978. Outpointing and outclassing Leon Spinks in a display of sheer dominance, Ali proved once again why he was hailed as one of boxing's greatest legends. Yet amidst this triumph, a lingering question remains unanswered - will Ali retire? The fight itself showcased what he had predicted - a seasoned professional against a novice. Despite the referee and judges awarding Spinks four rounds each, there was no denying Ali's superiority from the very beginning. As we gaze upon this historic image, it becomes evident that Larry Holmes, holder of the World Boxing Council championship, stands as the only logical opponent left for Ali. Tempted to make one final effort in pursuit of greatness, there is one obstacle standing in his way - a demand for $10 million after taxes. United in victory alongside him are members of the esteemed Ali Clan; his wife Veronica by his side while renowned comedian Dick Gregory shares their joy. Behind them stand his brother Rachman and manager Herbert Muhammad. This remarkable photograph captures both triumph and uncertainty – showcasing not only an extraordinary athlete but also revealing glimpses into personal relationships that shaped Muhammad Ali’s journey towards immortality within the realm of boxing history.
