EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a De Havilland D. H. 4A aircraft, proudly belonging to Air Transport & Travel Ltd, as it embarks on a historic journey. On August 25th, 1919, this remarkable British airline made history by initiating the first daily international air service between Hounslow in London and Le Bourget in Paris. Converted from World War I bombers, these four magnificent planes played a pivotal role for the company. The inaugural flight of this particular aircraft lasted an impressive 2 hours and 30 minutes. It carried a diverse cargo comprising grouse, newspapers, leather goods, and even Devonshire cream. Accompanying them was G M Stevenson-Reece—a newspaper reporter who undoubtedly captured every moment of this groundbreaking expedition. Sadly, despite their early success and pioneering spirit in the aviation industry, Air Transport & Travel Ltd faced financial difficulties due to subsidized low fares offered by foreign airlines. Consequently, they were forced into liquidation in December 1920. This photograph not only captures the essence of early commercial aviation but also serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by pioneering companies during that era. As we admire this snapshot from Memory Lane Prints' collection curated by Mirrorpix, let us appreciate the courage and determination exhibited by those who paved the way for modern air travel.
