Taken in the North Sea in 1916, it depicts a formation of British battle-cruisers skillfully zigzagging their way through the choppy waters. The zigzag maneuver, a tactic designed to make it harder for torpedoes to hit their mark, had become essential in the face of the German U-boat threat.
