In this evocative photograph, Wilbur Wright is seen returning his biplane to its hangar at Auvours, France, in the autumn of 1908. The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, had made history that year by conducting the first controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft in Europe, on August 8th at Le Mans-Le Croisic. Auvours, located near Tours, became the site of their base for further training and demonstrations of their flying machine.
